The Science of Sugar Addiction
(A 6-Part Video Series on What Makes Sugar Addictive)
Part 1: What is Sugar?
Sugar takes many forms, when you are clear about what is sugar, you can make educated decisions about which ones can stay and which ones need to go. I share my recommendations on the 4 categories of 'sugars' that need to go if you want freedom from cravings and food obsession.
Part 2: What is Addiction?
We joke about sugar being addictive, but is it really? And if it is addictive what does that even mean? In this video I go over various definitions of sugar addiction, and what is the difference between sugar addiction and sugar dependence. Just because a person enjoys sugar, eats a lot of it, and experiences withdrawal symptoms when they cut back or eliminate consumption, that doesn't mean they are addicted.
Part 3: What Makes Sugar Addictive?
How does the juice of sugar cane and sugar beets become addictive? That's crazy talk, right? Tune in and find out how sugar (sucrose) is transformed from a natural food into a narcotic, (no joke). You will also learn about the history of other natural plants that are transformed into drugs of abuse and the important parallels.
Part 4: The Science of Sugar
as an Opiate
There is a growing body of research that strongly suggests sugar is an opiate with the potential for addiction (in both lab animals and humans). I share this research (some highlights).
Part 5: What is an Opiate?
Opiates are a unique class of molecules that fit into the opioid receptors in the human brain and act as painkillers. From there they unleash predictable (both positive and negative) effects and for reasons I explain in this video, they are extremely hard to give up. (Unfortunately, moderation is no picnic either!)
Part 6: Do You have an Addiction?
Using the DSM-IV, I invite you to assess whether you fall on the addiction spectrum by taking my Sugar Addiction Quiz. If, after taking the quiz, you qualify for 'substance dependent', then abstinence is a powerful path to peace and freedom, and I explain why. The science and insights shared in this video series are not intended to persuade you or scare you into abstaining from sugar. It is to validate what you already know in your own heart and mind: sugar is a problem, and it is time to break free.
